The Last Jump
You know it’s coming. You circle it on the calendar. You prep yourself.
But you’re never really ready.
Yesterday, I watched Makenzie compete in her final high school sporting event. Her last time out on the track. Her last warm-up. Her last jump.
I’ve watched her do a lot of things over the years—take charges in basketball games, bounce back from injuries, lead teammates, leave everything on the floor. But standing there as her dad, watching this final high school moment unfold… man, it hit different.
She didn’t get the ending she wanted at state. That’s the truth. But it doesn’t change a single thing about what she’s accomplished. State champion in basketball. Three-time state qualifier in track. Team captain. Fierce competitor. Loyal teammate. And maybe more than anything else—a young woman who does things the right way.
Makenzie has never taken shortcuts. She’s never coasted. Everything she’s earned has come from hours when no one’s watching—early mornings, tough lifts, long car rides, tears, ice packs, and grit. Real grit.
And the thing is, I admire her more than I could ever say. For the work. For the leadership. For how she’s put herself in a position to succeed in college and in life. Not just as an athlete—but as a person.
This year’s been something special. She helped bring home a gold ball in basketball and punched her ticket to the state meet once again. But beyond the titles, it’s the effort that sticks with me. The way she never quit. The way she kept showing up.
I couldn’t be prouder. Not just because of what she’s done—but because of who she is.
Makenzie, I’ve loved watching you compete. Loved the fire in your eyes. Loved the way you never backed down. And now, I can’t wait to see what you do next. Because if this chapter is any indication, the next one’s gonna be unforgettable.
Thank you for letting me be there—on the sideline, in the stands, on the road—cheering you on. I’ve cherished every minute.
I love you, kid. And I’ll always be your biggest fan.
Let’s go, Kenni. ❤️
